January 23rd marks the beginning of Þorri or "frozen snow month" and is the day of midwinter, Icelanders call this day Bóndadagur. It takes it’s name from "Bóndi" which in today’s Icelandic means farmer, but was a synonym for “husband” back in the day. Bóndadagur was traditionally dedicated to the master of the house or farm, who was most often a working farmer.
