In Lára's garden

Music workshop in Þingeyri

On the 16th and 17th of July, a music workshop was hosted for children in the community center in Þingeyri. This event was organized by, amongst others, Pétur Albert Sigurðsson, a local who wanted to spread his love for music. He and his wife, Lára Dagbjört Halldórsdóttir, have hosted concerts in their home garden over the past few years, and these concerts have been well received, resulting in a series of concerts this summer called "In Lára's garden"

When Pétur was booking the singer Bríet with Rubin and Gaukur for a concert, he suggested that they host a music workshop for the kids. The three were keen on the idea and thought it was exciting. Bríet is currently one of Iceland’s most popular singers, Rubin plays guitar for the band Kaleo with Gaukur, who plays many instruments and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. They held the music workshop where the goal was to make a game out of music and sow music seeds for the future.

We're trying to teach them to truly enjoy music, to see that music is not just about being alone in a room reading note sheets.

We're trying to teach them to truly enjoy music, to see that music is not just about being alone in a room reading note sheets. That it is also a game and to show them the joy in it, that it can be a spark that lasts a lifetime. That is what we truly believe is most important,” says Þorleifur Gaukur Úlfarsson

A song called Three to Two Turtles was composed and performed, at the end of the workshop, on the big stage in Lára's garden in Þingeyri.
